WEEK-END  

Friday

We had a party with campfire at Chloe’s place, the partner of Adele. We had a lot of fun and it allowed us to get to know each other.

Saturday

I went shopping at the King of Prussia Mall, a big shopping center with my partner Hannah. All the exchange partners met in Philly for a dinner followed by a Ghost Tour. It was a guided tour of the city with stops where the guide told us about the history of the building we were looking at. It was really freezing but we enjoyed it.

Sunday

My host family, Lorna, Estelle and I had a day trip in Washington. We walked on the National Mall where we could see many different monuments including the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington monument (dedicated to the first president of the USA) and the National World War II  Memorial. Then, we went to the National Air and Space Museum and had lunch downtown.

MARIE LINE's WEEKEND

I went to Chloe’s house who is Adele’s partner where we all had a campfire and I slept there. In the morning, Adele, Tasnim, me and our partners ate a brunch which was huge with French toast, eggs, pancakes… On Saturday night, we all ate in a restaurant and went on a ghost tour and after that we ate ice cream.

On Sunday morning, we went to Emrys’ partner's house to all have brunch. After that we did shopping and watched a scary movie.

Weekend of October 18th-19th

On Saturday morning, some people went to the Mall (big commercial center) to do shopping, on Saturday night we participated in a weird experience: the Ghost Tour. A strange woman with witches clothes told us ghosts stories about different famous places in Philly like Washington Square. On Sunday, we had a typical American brunch (breakfast + lunch).

Week-end

On Saturday morning I had breakfast with my partner’s familly in downtown Philly because my partner was in school. It was very tasty and after this, we did shopping in Philly. We had lunch in a fastfood restaurant; I ate hummus which is Middle Eastern. We walked to the Imax, a movie theater by the river; the Imax is a cinema in a dome and the screen is above you. It was really cool.

After all of this, I went to the restaurant and ghost tour with all the students.

On Sunday I went to brunch with French and American students, and after I stayed in my partner’s house.

On Saturday morning, I went to the city with Deport, Emrys and their partners. We saw the Magic Garden which is a little place you can visit in the center of Philly where a man has covered the wall with mosaic and other different things. I thought it was a little bit strange. After this we came to Sonia’s house to watch a movie while we were waiting to meet  with the rest of the exchange students at a restaurant.  After eating, we went on the Ghost Tour.

On Sunday, we went to Emrys’s partner’s house for brunch and I stayed there until the evening, then we went to the cinema to see a scary movie called “the Visit”. I liked it because I found it more funny than scary.

Our Week-end

On Saturday, we went to the stadium to see a soccer match. It was a match between the FCS team and a military school and FCS won 3 to 0.

Then we went to a fast food restaurant called ‘Smash Burger’ where we ate  lunch; we had French fries with unlimited drink (soda,limonade) in addition to a burger Then we went home in the afternoon. We played until  it  was time to meet  the other students  at a restaurant and had dinner together.

After dinner we made two groups and then we followed the guide inside the Ghost Tour  and she told us some ‘scary’ stories which were not scary but interesting and a little repetitive.

On Sunday morning  at 11 we went to Zak’s house for a brunch where we found everyone. In the evening we watched a horror movie called “The Visit” which was  funny

Then we ate in restaurant speciliased in sea food.

First week end

After school on Friday (2:30pm), most of the students went to Adele's partner's house to have a bonfire with smores.

After the bonfire, we watched a movie and a few people stayed for a sleepover.  The next morning, we ate such a good brunch with Marie-Line and our partners at the Green Eggs Cafe! We were so full after our French toast and pancakes!!

Then, we went to Tasnim's partner's house to relax a bit and watch a movie before going to dinner all together and going on the Philadelphia's Ghost Tour. We found it more funny than scary and we were very cold.

On Sunday, we had brunch at Emrys' partner's at noon until 2pm and after that we went shopping and watched a horror movie : "The Visit" at the movie theater... it was a creepy one..

The Barnes Foundation

On October 15th, we visited an art Museum in Philadelphia centre called the Barnes Foundation. This museum is located not too far from the Museum of Art, more exactly on the Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway. It was designed by two architects named  Tod Williams and Billie Tsien.

It’s an exceptional collection put together by an art lover who bought numerous impressionist and post impressionist works (Renoir, Cezanne..). This museum countains different works by many  classical or modern artists, like Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin ect…

In addition to the works, there were also collections of furniture and jewels.

The Museum gave us audio headsets to have more information about some paintings of the collection.  In each room, there was also the presence of small books which listed the different paintings.

I think it was very interesting, I loved this Museum! The given information was very clear and structured. It was impressive because this art lover owned a  big collection which is displayedon three floors!

 The Philadelphia Fine Arts Museum/ Thomas Eakins

On Thursday, the 15th, we had a cultural visit of different museums in Philly.

At first, we went to the Fine Arts Museum situated on Broad Street in Philadelphia next to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in downtown Philadelphia. This museum offers a vast collection of American Art.

All of us took part in a guided tour and saw many interesting works including Thomas Eakins’ ones, the Staircase Group by Charles Willson Peal and also some modern paintings such as Picasso’s ones.

Thomas Earkins is Philadelphia’s greatest painter of the 19th century. This man is connected with FCS because his father was a calligraphy teacher and his wife was a student of the school. He resolved to paint contempory American life.

He used to study anatomy in Paris in the Beaux Arts, and was interested in surgery. He realised two big epic paintings dedicated to American science.

This painting represents a surgical operation on a young man. The doctors operating on the patient are dressed with street clothes because of the bad hygiene ( they weren’t aware of bacterias and bad germs at that time ). The chief surgeon is Doctor Gross, who studied at the Philaldephia University.

This second painting also shows a surgical operation when doctors are taking off a woman’s breast. Doctor Agnew supervises the operation and explains some facts about surgery to his students. Thomas Earkins includes himself in his painting. The scene takes place in the center of Pennsylvania.

We can notice that surgeons are wearing surgical crubs, progress has been made during Thomas Eakins’s period.
